Definition: The Population encompasses all inhabitants whose usual place of residence is within the administrative unit. Numbers published are based on census results from 1987 and updated with annual migration numbers and natural population changes (births & deaths). In east german countries the base for population numbers is set according to numbers being at October, 3rd in 1990.Included in population numbers are all registered foreigners, excluding relatives living in Germany of foreign military personal and diplomatic or consulate representatives. In Germany there are different ways of being registered as inhabitant of a city, firstly the 'Hauptwohnsitz' is the usual place of residence (main place of residence), secondly the 'Nebenwohnsitz' is the secondary place of residence. The official statistics refers to the former definition. Sometimes these numbers differ from publications by the cities themselves, as these often include inhabitants with secondary place of residence. The 2011 CensusWith the publication of the 2011 Census results on 31 May 2013, a new basis was provided for intercensal population updates. The population data provided so far for 2011 and 2012 were intercensal updates based on the population census of 1987 (in western Germany) and on an extract from the Central Population Register of the former GDR of 3 October 1990 (in eastern Germany). These data have been revised, taking account of the 2011 Census results and the subsequent recalculation of population data for 2011. Final results from intercensal population updates will not be available until 2014.
